Are a Donkey and Jackass the Same?

Three names for the same animal are: donkey, ass, burro. But what is Jackass? It is simply the name for a male donkey, the female is known as a “jennet”.

The donkey is one of the oldest of all domesticated animals. It was domesticated more 5,000 years ago by the Egyptians. Because it is such a useful animal to man, it has spread around the world, and there are many different kinds of donkeys.

For example, the Somali wild ass, which is found in Somalia and other parts of Africa, is a shy animal that lives in groups of from 5 to 20. it eats the dry grass and shrubs of the desert.  Some natives do not hunt it, but others hunt it for food, for its hide, or to export it alive. Today it is a rare animal.

There are wild asses that live in Asia. One type, the Syrian ass once lived in Syria and other parts of the Middle East, but is now probably extinct. The ass is strictly a desert animal, and can go for some time with out water.

Just before the young are born they gather into great herds, but soon break up into small groups, and scatter over the country. The donkey of today is descendant of the Nubian wild ass of North Eastern Africa, where it once lived from the Nile to the Red Sea.

Most of the wild types that existed in various parts of the world have been killed off. Today, man is trying to protect some of the few kinds that are left. In many parts of Mexico and Central America, the ass, or burro, is a common means  of transportation, instead of the horse or motor-car.
